"Viking" style smoked mussels

30 years ago you could still buy smoked and canned mussels in oil in Scandinavia. Since I moved to Spain I have not seen them here anymore in the supermarkets so I  needed to develop an easy and scenic  system to smoke these mussels for myself in small amounts inside the house.
You take a cast iron pot with a cover and cut a round piece of iron net which goes in the pot.You spread some chips on the bottom from the fig tree and place the net above them with mussels placed so that they do not  touch each others.
Put the pot on fire (gas or electricity) and feel the cover when it`s so hot you cannot touch it anymore. From this point you start to count 10 minutes and mussels are ready to be served.
Preparation before smoking:
-fresh or frozen mussels without shell
-roll the mussels in olive oil (Virgen Extra) which you have spiced with salt ,pepper and few drops of lemon juice.Place above the iron net.
So easy and later when you open the pot there is a lovely perfumed scent from the fig tree.
